A newly opened stretch of Mumbai’s Coastal Road plays a humming sound of the Oscar-winning song “Jai Ho” from the 2008 movie Slumdog Millionaire when cars drive along at the mandated speed. It’s designed to keep speeding in control, but residents of Breach Candy, one of the city’s most expensive neighbourhoods, say it’s disrupting their lives. While the people living in high rises are “irritated” by the noise, a cafe owner just metres away says, “I don’t think it’s a nuisance.” “I don’t hear it much at this distance”, Gaurav Kesarkar added. At least 650 families in the area have now complained to the municipal authorities over the noise. Additional municipal commissioner Avinash Dhakne told The Independent: "We don’t find any disturbance as such. It’s hardly 500m. There is no traffic safety hazard. However, we will examine the grievances.”
