The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said Friday it has confirmed at least 5,002 people have been killed during recent demonstrations against the regime in Iran, the vast majority of them protesters. The group signaled the toll could rise, as it was still investigating another 9,787 possible fatalities.

Iranian state TV reports 3,117 deaths from recent protests, while Foreign Minister threatens U.S. amid escalating tensions.

The Martyrs Foundation noted that 2,427 of those killed in the demonstrations were civilians and security forces.
