Rep. Doug LaMalfa, who represented California's 1st Congressional District for more than a decade, has died, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday during a meeting of Republican lawmakers. He was 65.

LaMalfa's death is a critical shift in the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives, tightening Republicans' razor-thin majority.

LaMalfa was elected to the California State Assembly and State Senate before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012.
