What to know about Fed candidates Kevin Hassett, Kevin Warsh, Chris Waller and Rick Rieder.

President Donald Trump said Friday that Kevin Warsh has moved to the top of his list as the next Federal Reserve chair, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Warsh's odds jumped to as high as 40% after Trump told the Wall Street Journal that Warsh has risen to the top of his list to be the next chair of the Fed.

“I think the two Kevins are great,” he said. “I think there are a couple of other people that are great.”

"His opinion matters if it's good, if it's based on data," Hassett said.

There's concern that the National Economic Council director is too close to the president.

Traders marked Warsh as the narrow favorite to replace Jerome Powell, assigning him roughly a 46% chance of nomination, compared with about 39% for Hassett.

Hassett declined in a CNBC interview to directly address his own candidacy but said forging consensus is an important part of the job.
