Morocco declares holiday to mark UN resolution on Western Sahara

RABAT: Morocco’s royal palace on Tuesday declared October 31 starting next year as a national holiday marking the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution backing the North African country’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. The resolution, adopted last Friday, states that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty for Western Sahara could be “a most feasible” solution to Rabat’s 50-year conflict with the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which seeks an independent state in the territory.
