The crash left wooden crates marked ‘live monkeys’ in the tall grass on the side of the road

Several rhesus monkeys escaped after the interstate crash, but all but one were reportedly ‘destroyed’ by late Tuesday

Authorities are searching for escaped rhesus monkeys after a truck wreck near Heidelberg sparked confusion over where the animals came from and whether they pose a health threat.

Video shows monkeys crawling through tall grass on the side of Interstate 59 just north of Heidelberg, with wooden crates labeled “live animals” strewn about.

Officials in Mississippi initially warned the monkeys were carrying diseases, but Tulane University later denied this.

Out of the 21 Rhesus monkeys in the overturned vehicle, thirteen have been recaptured, five are dead and three are still missing.
