Iowa has formally revoked the license of the Des Moines schools superintendent who was picked up by ICE and switched his status from paid to unpaid leave.

Ian Andre Roberts, superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, was apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for a deportation order and a loaded gun.

ICE said Roberts was in the country illegally, didn't have authorization to work and was subject to a final removal order issued in 2024.

Ian Roberts, who is challenging the order to deport him to his native Guyana, remained jailed Wednesday in Sioux City, about 150 miles north of Des Moines.

On Oct. 2, Ian Roberts was taken into custody by the U.S. Department of Justice and was removed from the Sioux City jail.

Federal prosecutors on Thursday charged the now former head of De Moines Public Schools on weapons and immigration offenses.
