An estimated 1 million people took to the streets of France on Sept. 18 to protest President Emmanuel Macron’s austerity policies. Such demonstrations are far from unusual in France, but the challenges the nation is facing today are big and might even threaten the foundations of the Fifth Republic. The recent appointment by Macron of his fifth prime minister in about 21 months, Sebastien Lecornu, might have eased the political crisis in the short term.
