US safety regulators are probing Tesla's electric-powered door handles, responding to reports that they stopped working, leaving children trapped.

Some complaints allege that children were trapped in the back seats and could only be freed by breaking the windows.

Cars have lost 12 V power, trapping children and dogs in hot cars.

The NHTSA said the probe is focused on 2021 Tesla Model Ys after receiving nine reports of door handles not working possibly due to low battery voltage.

Chief designer Franz von Holzhausen said Wednesday that the company is "working on" combining the electronic and manual door releases after owners have reported getting trapped.
