SEOUL: Hundreds of South Korean workers were headed back to Seoul on Friday after their detention in a US immigration raid that Hyundai warned will delay completion of its battery factory. South Korean workers accounted for most of the 475 people arrested last week at the Hyundai-LG battery plant under construction in Georgia, prompting tense negotiations between Seoul and Washington, staunch security allies.

A chartered plane will ferry hundreds of South Koreans home from Atlanta after they were detained for illegally working at a Hyundai electric battery plant.

South Korean workers detained in an immigration raid last week in the U.S. state of Georgia will depart from the U.S. around 1430 local time on Wednesday.

It comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is due to meet South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun.

More than 300 South Koreans were rounded up in the Sept. 4 raid at the battery factory under construction at Hyundai’s sprawling auto plant in Georgia.

"Our nationals who had been detained by U.S. immigration authorities will soon be returning home," said South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

More than 300 South Koreans who were arrested in the raid are due to return home on Friday.

South Korea's president called for improvements to the visa system, saying companies will likely hesitate to invest in the U.S. until that happens.

The plane carrying workers detained in an immigration raid of a Georgia Hyundai-LG plant last week left the U.S., bound for South Korea.

It comes as the country's president and Hyundai's chief executive have warned about the impact of the raid.
