The disaster struck Sunday, devastating Tarasin in the Marra mountains, the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army said in a statement. Sudan is embroiled in a bloody civil war, which has plunged the country into one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

At least 1,000 were killed in a landslide that destroyed a village in the Marra Mountains area of western Sudan, leaving only one survivor.

The landslide on 31 August happened days of continuous rain and "levelled" a remote mountains village, a rebel group says.
