Troops are already operating in some areas ahead of the planned operation, which the ICRC says will worsen "an already catastrophic situation".

As the earliest stages of a massive assault on Gaza City take shape, Israel is calling up tens of thousands of reservists to take part in the impending military operation.

Israel Defense Forces spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said it now controls the outskirts of Gaza City, which was one of Hamas' last strongholds.
