The Homelessness minister has been hoist by her own petard. But what does this saga say about the PM’s judgment?

Rushanara Ali previously vowed to ‘challenge unreasonable increases’

In a letter to the PM, Ms Ali said remaining in the role would be a ‘distraction’ from the work of the government

Labour MP Rushanara Ali has tonight resigned as homelessness minister after she allegedly threw out her own tenants and then raised rent on her London home by £700.

Rushanara Ali was accused of ‘staggering hypocrisy’ after a report that she kicked out her tenants and raised the rent by hundreds of pounds.

It comes after she increased rent on a house she owns within weeks of the previous tenants' contracts ending.

The resignation is a blow for the Labour government, which trails Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform UK party in polls.
