The imbalance in President Trump’s treatment of America’s closest trading partners may come from his desire to make Canada the 51st state, some Canadians believe.

Recent pacts with Britain, Europe and Japan mean that autos exported from those countries and regions face lower U.S. tariffs than Canadian vehicles do.

Canada faces a 35 percent tariff on its exports to the United States if it does not reach a trade deal with the Trump administration by Friday.

The extension gives Mexico more time to reach a trade deal with the United States and avert, for now, heavier tariffs President Trump has threatened to impose starting on Friday.

The president also announced sweeping tariffs on dozens of countries, as he continued his drive to remake how global trade operates.
