President Trump wants America to produce more of the much-needed mineral, but a 50 percent tariff could undermine his aim of a manufacturing renaissance.

The US imports roughly half of copper needs each year, used in construction, transportation and electronics.

President Trump has told 22 countries that they will face tariffs of at least 20% on Aug. 1 if they don’t reach agreements by then.

"America will, once again, build a DOMINANT Copper Industry," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social media platform.
