PUERTO ESCONDIDO: Hurricane Erick killed at least two people as it swept through southern Mexico causing significant damage to coastal communities before weakening to a low-pressure system Thursday night, authorities said. A man was electrocuted while helping with debris removal in the southern Oaxaca state, where Erick made landfall, after handling high-voltage cables near a stream, the state government said.

Erick is expected to rapidly intensify and reach major hurricane strength as it approaches Mexico’s coast.

Der Wirbelsturm wütet im Süden des Landes und trifft viele Menschen hart. Flüsse treten über die Ufer und Landwege sind abgeschnitten.

“If you are in low-lying areas, near rivers, near waterways, it is best for you to go to shelters,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said.

The storm is expected to make landfall on Mexico's southern Pacific coast on Thursday.

Hurricane Erick strengthened in the Pacific Ocean and could become a major hurricane before striking Mexico, the National Hurricane Center warned.

Erick set off flash floods in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero. A stretch of the Pacific coastline, including Acapulco, was under a hurricane warning.

The storm threatens to unleash destructive winds near where the eye crashes ashore, flash floods and a dangerous storm surge, U.S. forecasters say.

The United States National Hurricane Center has warned of the risk of ‘life-threatening flooding and mudslides’.

Hurricane Erick made landfall in Mexico’s southern Pacific coast as a Category 3 storm with 125 mph winds Thursday.
