Hurricane Erick strengthened in the Pacific Ocean and could become a major hurricane before striking Mexico, the National Hurricane Center warned.

Erick is expected to rapidly intensify and reach major hurricane strength as it approaches Mexico’s coast.

Tropical Storm Erick was upgraded to a hurricane early Monday morning, with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.

“If you are in low-lying areas, near rivers, near waterways, it is best for you to go to shelters,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said.

The storm is expected to make landfall on Mexico's southern Pacific coast on Thursday.

The United States National Hurricane Center has warned of the risk of ‘life-threatening flooding and mudslides’.
