Sir Keir Starmer must put a future Labour government on a “war footing” to tackle Britain’s stagnating economy, Gordon Brown has warned.
The last Labour prime minister said the UK faced a “make or break” moment to turn around 15 years of stagnating growth since the 2008 financial crisis.
He called on Starmer to set up a new National Economic Council, jointly chaired with Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, to co-ordinate strategy and avoid the divisions between the Treasury and No 10 that characterised the New Labour years.
“If the Treasury, [works] with No 10 at a National Economic Council … then in my view, we have a chance to break out of some of the difficulties that we’ve had in the past,” Brown said.
