March 11 (UPI) -- Domestic Product won his way into the Kentucky Derby picture with a scrambling victory in Saturday's Tampa Bay Derby, but only after a communications malfunction shut off wagering and forced a half-hour delay of the weekend's biggest race.
Kinza and Sweet Azteca sparkled at Santa Anita, while much of the rest of the action was on the turf, with contributions from Oaklawn Park and Turfway Park on the other surfaces.
On the global scene, upsets were the rule in both Australia and in Hong Kong.
The Road to the Roses
An apparent communications outage sent the tote system belly-up Saturday afternoon at Tampa Bay Downs, occasioning a half-hour delay -- and eliminating wagering -- in the running of the Grade III Tampa Bay Derby. Then it came down to a four-horse cavalry charge to the finish and a delay before the race was announced as official.
