A World Health Organisation panel developing healthcare guidelines for transgender people has been accused of being “highly biased” and likely to support an overly medical approach.
The UN agency published the details of 21 experts who will meet next month to discuss evidence and formulate recommendations for its new guidance.
They will consider how countries should be advised on healthcare services for trans and gender-diverse people and will look at issues including the “provision of gender-affirming care, including hormones” and “legal recognition of self-determined gender identity”.
Critics say there is a lack of diversity in the views held by those on the panel and no recognition of the views of experts who are concerned about the potential impact of puberty-blocking drugs on young people.
