Chinese hackers accessed 60,000 emails from US State Department accounts after breaking into a Microsoft platform this year, according to government officials.
The emails were taken from ten US foreign service accounts, nine from officials working on East Asian and the Pacific affairs and one working on Europe, according to Senate staff briefed on the cyberattack.
Microsoft said in July that Chinese state-linked hackers had broken into email accounts at 25 organisations and government agencies since May, including the US Commerce and State Departments.
