Sir, I was sad to read your leading article “Uncaring Profession” (Sep 18) but have to admit that you are right to suggest that doctors think they are special. The only thing that is special, however, is our ability to work in the NHS and obtain a lot of training and experience in our early years, to become competent and confident in our work and give our patients the care they deserve. If the government is serious about resolving this impasse it must renegotiate the contracts, especially for the junior doctors, as the 48-hour working week does not allow sufficient working time to obtain this experience. Increasing the hours that junior doctors could work in their first five years after qualification would improve
