Recent polling suggests the Labour Party has a lead of about 20 per cent over the Conservatives, but the gap between the two party leaders is considerably narrower. A recent Statista poll put Keir Starmer just seven points ahead of Rishi Sunak.

Starmer’s supporters argue he has shown his calibre by restoring party discipline and made Labour electable by steering it to the centre left after the extremism of Jeremy Corbyn. Sunak’s admirers say he has steadied the Conservative ship after the turmoil of Liz Truss, and is one of the few with the economic competence to lead the nation through a challenging period.
