Tony Blair has insisted that he will not be a backseat driver if Sir Keir Starmer wins the election next year but warned that Labour cannot tax and spend its way out of the economic crisis.

The former prime minister said that Starmer will inherit “a country that’s in a mess” and praised the Labour leader for saving the party “from the brink of extinction”.

He warned that Starmer must not repeat the mistakes of the Conservatives because the economic situation would be far worse than the one he inherited from John Major in 1997.

He told the Financial Times: “If Keir Starmer wins the election, which I think he’s got a good chance of doing, he’ll be the sixth prime minister in eight years.
