ir, If the UK were to follow your call to put the brakes on the EV transition (leading article, Jul 26), the British public would be burdened with a higher cost of driving. More than 80 per cent of the vehicles sold in the UK are second-hand and any delay to the 2030 phase-out dates would result in fewer electric vehicles making their way on to the used market. More drivers would be stuck with more expensive to own and run petrol cars.
With four fifths of cars built in the UK exported, and 70 per cent going to markets that are phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles, if our car industry does not shift to meet these changes in demand it will wither
