The increase in average salaries sped up again in June, adding to concerns that higher wages, a key driver of inflation, could prove more persistent.

The average salary advertised by employers rose by an annual 3.6 per cent to £37,807 last month, up from a 3.3 per cent increase in May and 2.9 per cent in April, according to Adzuna, the jobs search engine.

There are some signs that the jobs market is cooling. While the number of UK vacancies increased in June on an annual basis to 1,059,153, up by almost 1 per cent from May, job openings were down by 12 per cent, although the rate was less than 17 per cent in May and the almost 19 per cent figure recorded
