New York City has agreed to pay $13.7 million to Black Lives Matter protesters who were arrested or beaten by police during demonstrations after the murder of George Floyd in 2020.

The proposed payment was filed in federal court to settle a landmark civil rights lawsuit brought on behalf of about 1,300 people who alleged abuse by the New York police during the protests.

If approved by a judge, it would be one of the most expensive payouts ever awarded in a lawsuit over mass arrests. Each protester will receive about $10,000.

The lawsuit focused on 18 of the countless protests that erupted across New York in the days after Floyd, 46, was killed by the Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in May 2020. Graphic
