Three Just Stop Oil activists interrupted play at the Open Championship on Friday with the golfer Billy Horschel ignoring official advice to escort one of them away.

The protestors set off a flare, scattered orange powder and tried to stage a sit-in at the par-three 17th at Royal Liverpool. Horschel, Corey Conners and Alex Noren were preparing to take their second shots when a man ducked under the ropes at the packed hole.

Boos rang out and a spectator shouted “sh**house” as police carried the first protester away. When a woman then ran onto the fringes of the green and scattered powder, Horschel marched towards her.
