The number of couples tying the knot in Scotland last year rose by levels not seen since the postwar booms of 1919 and 1945.

There were 30,033 marriages in Scotland in 2022, 24 per cent higher than in 2021, and the highest number on record since 2012, according to figures from the National Records of Scotland.

The huge rise is comparable to increases in 1919 and 1945, when marriage numbers jumped by 28 per cent and 31 per cent respectively.

Daniel Burns, the head of vital events statistics at National Records Scotland, said: “Following the global health emergency these statistics show us the scale of the disruption. Only the two world wars have had more impact on the number of marriages taking place.”
