Britain needs a closer trading relationship with the European Union, to escape its “doom-loop of low growth and high taxes”, Sir Keir Starmer has said, as he pledged to reopen Boris Johnson’s Brexit trade deal with the bloc.
In a speech in London, Starmer told business leaders that in government Labour would “fix” the weaknesses in the current trade and co-operation agreement to give UK firms greater access to the European market.
He insisted that this could be done without the UK rejoining either the European single market or customs union, which he claimed would create more uncertainty for business.
