Sir, Matthew Parris’s article “Prisons are a disgrace but no one will say so” (May 13) should be a wake-up call to policymakers of all viewpoints, who have neglected this subject for far too long. The real disgrace lies not inside our prisons but in the failure of public and private rehabilitation efforts to help prisoners into jobs, housing and law-abiding lives after their release. The good work done by prison officers, managers and governors is under-reported. In recent months at HMP Pentonville, where I have served for five years as a prison chaplain, we have opened a drug-free wing and a ground-breaking neurodiverse unit wing for those with disorders such as autism or ADHD that has reduced violence throughout the prison; and
