o the London borough of Ealing, where the local Labour MP Rupa Huq is celebrating some “good news”. In 2021, the local council approved plans for a mixed-use 26-storey tower scheme, which would have replaced its (genuinely hideous) headquarters. Patel Taylor and Trehearne architects envisaged six new buildings, which included offices, 477 homes and a library.
Huq was among those who made 2,165 objections to the planning application. She was fond of describing the development as a “monster”, a “white elephant” and a “sore thumb”. She was annoyed by the proposed tower, which she accused of “stealing our sky”. In the end Huq’s complaints won the day. The sky was saved.
