his newspaper has long been supportive of the government’s ambition to put Britain at the forefront of the global transition to clean energy, including the goal of phasing out sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. This target, announced in November 2020, promised to be an important step towards delivering on the legally binding pledge to achieve net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 and would lead to significant improvement in air quality in Britain’s towns and cities, as demanded by The Times Clean Air for All campaign. The expectation was that by adopting the most ambitious target for electric vehicle sales of any big economy, Britain would make itself a more attractive market for global automotive manufacturers, luring investment and jobs.
