Dame Jane Goodall, the renowned primatologist, has warned environmental protest groups that blocking roads is “counterproductive” and risks alienating the public.

Her comments came as 56 activists from Just Stop Oil slowed traffic in parts of central London to a crawl for the fourth consecutive day.

When asked if she would like to see more direct action on biodiversity, Goodall told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I’d like to see more direct action — but not the kind that blocks traffic for miles and miles along the high road, [that stops] ordinary people trying to get home to cook supper or be with their children. That is counterproductive, I think.”
