Sir Keir Starmer once named his fantasy dinner party guests as Thierry Henry, Nelson Mandela, Jacinda Ardern and Barack Obama. Last night he had to settle for Gareth Southgate and the King.

The Labour leader and his wife, Victoria, were among the 23 guests invited for a “dine and sleep” evening at Windsor Castle, the first of the King’s reign.

The King’s decision to convene guests from politics, religion, the arts and the diplomatic world continues a tradition set by the late Queen, who also typically organised the dinner parties around Easter.
