Sir Keir Starmer is planning to visit Albania and France in an effort to show he would do a better job of stopping small boats than Rishi Sunak.

The Labour leader is in talks with the Albanian government and French officials about working visits focused on the problem.

In Albania, Starmer would be likely to meet Edi Rama, the prime minister, while in France he could meet police and others working at Calais. The visits are likely to take place before the summer.
