Netflix has announced a second season of the popular Squid Game series in an effort to lure back subscribers (Constance Kampfner writes).
The dystopian thriller set in Seoul depicts debt-ridden contestants competing in playground games for a cash prize, with players who lose being killed. The first season’s bloodsoaked plot gripped audiences, who made it the most watched show on Netflix to date with more than 100 million viewers in the first month.
The streaming giant is hoping the second season will help it turn its fortunes around, too, after it reported an unexpected drop in subscribers in April. Shares in Netflix fell by as much by 70 per cent after announcing that it had lost 200,000 customers in the first quarter. It was the
