The United Nations is making a late attempt to stop the first flight deporting migrants to Rwanda next week, warning that it would breach Britain’s international obligations.

The UNHCR, its refugee agency, submitted legal analysis supporting an injunction of the flight until the High Court has ruled on whether the policy is lawful.

Home Office lawyers said sending migrants who cross the Channel in small boats to Rwanda was lawful because it is in the public interest. They argued that the policy was intended to deter people from crossing the Channel in small boats when they have already travelled through safe third countries.
