June 8 (UPI) -- German tennis star Alexander Zverev underwent surgery on the right ankle he injured at the 2022 French Open and is determined to "come back stronger than ever," he wrote on social media.

Zverev posted about his surgery Tuesday on Instagram and Facebook. He will reach a career-high No. 2 in the ATP rankings next week due to his semifinal run at the French Open.

Zverev sustained his ankle injury and retired in the second set of that match against Rafael Nadal on Friday in Paris.

"We all have our own journey in life," Zverev wrote for the caption on his social media posts. "This is part of mine. Next week I'll reach a career high ranking of No. 2 in the world, but [Tuesday] I had to undergo surgery.
