The OpenAI CEO backed calls to slow AI development but said "pacing" does not mean stopping progress altogether

Sam Altman warned that AI's rapid pace of development could go "very badly" in two ways: humans could lose control of the future to AI systems, or a single person or company could use AI to concentrate power and impose their worldview on others.
"We are unapologetically on Team Humanity, and AI must always serve people," Altman wrote in an X $TWTR post just after midnight on Monday. He added that "no amount of American competitive pressure should justify recklessness" and that there was "no reason any of us should come to work" if frontier labs could not act responsibly.
