EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants coach John Harbaugh didn’t put training wheels on his new quarterback. Harbaugh saw the success Jaxson Dart had running an extension of the Ole Miss offense last season as a rookie. But he believed his quarterback needed to be able to handle the complexities of a more conventional NFL offense.So Harbaugh and his offensive staff, led by offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, put Dart through quarterback school this offseason. There were predictable growing pains as Dart transitioned away from operating an RPO-heavy offense out of the shotgun. But over time, Dart made progress lining up under center and engineering a passing attack that heavily features play-action.Then on Sunday night, Dart aced his first test. The second-year quarterback had a flawless encore to a promising rookie season. Dart completed 23-of-29 passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Giants’ 28-20 statement win over the Cowboys.“For him to have all this on his plate and to execute the way he did, to me, was just tremendous and very impressive,” Harbaugh said. “It was a great performance by Jaxson.”Top Plays from Cowboys @ GiantsNo one in the NFL could deny the high-end moments from Dart’s rookie season. His displayed rare playmaking ability when things broke down. The question skeptics had was if Dart could improve at the routine aspects of playing quarterback. Could he resist the urge to hit the eject button from the pocket at the first sign of trouble and instead find simple solutions?A fourth-quarter drive Sunday night provided strong evidence that Dart has made significant progress in that area. There was nothing flashy about the 13-play, 65-yard touchdown drive that gave the Giants a 28-14 lead to seal the win. Dart was ruthlessly efficient, repeatedly hitting running back Devin Singletary in the left flat as pressure came off the left edge — 12 yards, 7 yards, 9 yards. The third straight completion went for a touchdown.It was beautifully boring. It’s the type of quarterbacking that will keep Dart far from the blue medical tent on the sideline and keep the Giants’ offense rolling.“I felt very comfortable. I thought that we just did a really good job of staying in progress throughout the game,” Dart said. “I thought (Nagy) called an awesome game, and I thought the guys just played really, really hard. His legs were still a weapon, as he had eight carries for 59 yards before three kneeldowns to end the game. He avoided any unnecessary hits by sliding or getting out of bounds. The biggest hit he took was the result of a personal foul by Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown for leveling him out of bounds at the end of a 22-yard zone-read keeper on the Giants’ opening drive.The hit took place on the Giants’ sideline, so Overshown was promptly confronted by an army of blue jerseys defending their quarterback.
