OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said late Sunday that artificial intelligence (AI) labs owe the world confidence that they will develop increasingly capable systems responsibly and that the cost of building in safety is worth paying no matter how intense the competitive pressure gets.
‘No Reason Any of Us Should Come to Work’ Without Accountability
Every frontier lab has to deliver on responsible development, Altman argued in a post on X, or there’s “no reason any of us should come to work.”
OpenAI has also been using "safety cases" and monitoring as part of its approach to managing increasingly capable models, while Altman said companies should not wait for legislation to begin implementing safeguards.
“When we talk about "pacing", we do not mean "stopping". Progress has been rapid and will continue to be. But it should be slower than it otherwise could be; interventions like safety cases and monitoring have significant costs.”
