Russia has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping offered to facilitate peace negotiations and help end the ongoing war in Ukraine.Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov revealed that both leaders showed a keen interest in finding a peaceful settlement to the conflict. He confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed their willingness to assist.“During their bilateral meetings, Modi and Xi took a keen interest in the Ukraine settlement and actively offered their good offices to help find a solution,” Peskov said.The initiative comes at a critical juncture as persistent efforts by US President Donald Trump to broker a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv continue to face hurdles.Camaraderie among the three leadersThe camaraderie among the three leaders was evident during the summit’s opening day, where Modi, Xi and Putin walked together and held hands, signaling unity amid ongoing global geopolitical fractures.During a bilateral meeting with Putin, following their previous interaction at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to diplomatic solutions. Modi reiterated that “dialogue and diplomacy” remain the only viable path forward to resolve conflicts, emphasising that India stands ready to support all peace efforts.According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders also deliberated on critical regional issues affecting maritime trade and the security of Indian seafarers, particularly ongoing instabilities in the Black Sea and West Asia regions. On the economic front, both nations discussed expanding bilateral trade and advancing the implementation of their Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030 across sectors including energy, defense, infrastructure, technology, and culture.Published on September 13, 2026
