One game — let alone one quarter — can’t make or break a player’s NFL Draft evaluation. But NFL teams do pay close attention to how prospects respond in big moments, especially when facing adversity.So, expect to hear a lot about Arch Manning answering the bell with Texas down 20 on Saturday night, or about Drew Mestemaker bouncing back from a nightmarish opener to help spring a colossal upset. We’ll be talking about a wild Week 2 for some time.What stood out in the NFL Draft landscape?Texas completes comeback over Ohio StateChris Vannini1. There’s no escaping the Arch Manning storylines this season, so what did we learn about him in Texas’ wild comeback win over Ohio State? Did any other prospects in that game stand out?This was a Manning performance that can be interpreted in many ways. He struggled at times with Ohio State’s zone coverage and turned down throws he should have made. He also appeared trigger shy on occasion, and his final numbers (23-of-37 passing for 195 yards, one TD and one interception) look very pedestrian.But Manning had a much better night than the box score would indicate, mainly because of his execution on “got to have it” throws in the second half.Had Texas come up short on a fourth-and-6 in the fourth quarter, the game basically would have been over. But Manning fired a 12-yard seed against the blitz to keep that drive alive. His touchdown toss earlier in that quarter, from the far hash to Ryan Wingo, was perfectly placed in tight coverage. And there were several broken plays on which Manning used his legs to extend, buy time and find an open receiver.The box score also doesn’t show the plays that should have been made, like a drop by Wingo in the end zone or a deep shot to Cam Coleman that somehow turned into an interception.I’m not going to try to sell you that Manning was outstanding, or that this type of game solidifies him as the No. 1 pick. But he was resilient and made enough plays to beat the top-ranked team in the country. Let’s not pretend that is nothing.As for Ohio State, QB Julian Sayin had a strong performance overall, but he wasn’t able to make enough plays in the second half.And what can I say about Jeremiah Smith that hasn’t already been said? He’s the best player in college football, full stop, and one of the best prospects I have seen over the last two decades. Regardless of the coverage, he feels inevitable, because of his speed, physicality and ball-winning skills.I am eager to get the film on this one to dive into the rest of the prospects.2. We already covered Drew Mestemaker’s performance in Oklahoma State’s upset win. But how will a difficult day — and Oregon’s loss — affect Dante Moore’s draft stock?According to my mentions on social media, Moore is “awful” and nothing but a “media creation” when it comes to his NFL prospects. Obviously, that’s not true — he received major grades from NFL teams this offseason.But he did not have his best game Saturday and was a contributing factor to the loss.Credit the Oklahoma State defense, because it brought the fight to the trenches, and Moore had few answers once he felt the heat. There were several examples on money downs when Moore’s team needed him to make a play, and the timing of his reads and decisions wasn’t there. (It didn’t help that his most reliable target, tight end Jamari Johnson, missed the game with an injury.)It wasn’t a complete disaster for Moore, though. He made several impressive throws, including dropping the ball in the bucket on the double move by Dakorien Moore for a 36-yard touchdown. But we also learned that the supporting cast around Moore is a problem. Oregon’s offensive line has several new starters, and it shows; multiple drops ended drives; a fumble by running back Dierre Hill Jr. stymied a potential game-altering final drive. There were frequent head-scratching moments from the play calling, too.Moore was far from perfect, especially in the first half, but this loss was more of an indictment of Oregon’s issues — not the quarterback’s.There were almost two dozen NFL personnel in Stillwater, Okla., for this matchup. If they were there to scout the quarterbacks, they likely left far more impressed with Mestemaker. The body of work matters more than one game, but this result won’t go unnoticed when it comes to Moore’s final evaluation.3. His team lost, but Arizona State wide receiver Reed Harris put on a show at Texas A&M (nine catches for 189 yards and two TDs). What is Harris’ NFL outlook?I watched plenty of the Boston College passing game last season to scout Lewis Bond (a 2026 sixth-round pick by the Houston Texans), but it was Harris — with his size and speed — who frequently drew my eye and made a case for an early-round grade. The Montana native was a popular portal target this offseason before he chose Arizona State.Harris started the year fairly high in my summer rankings (No. 12 underclassman wide receiver), but he is making a case to be much higher.
