Illinois entered Saturday’s matchup with Duke as the favorite and with a chance to stay undefeated on the young season. Instead, the Illini turned in an embarrassing defensive performance and collapsed after halftime in a 31-27 loss at Gies Memorial Stadium.Against a Duke team that lost star quarterback Darian Mensah to the transfer portal during the offseason, Illinois had every reason to expect a win at home. For much of the first half, it looked like the Illini offense would deliver one.Illinois (1-1) came out hot, moving the ball with ease and repeatedly attacking Duke (2-0) through the air. Receiver Collin Dixon looked like a star, finishing with 11 receptions for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Dixon was nearly unstoppable, consistently creating separation and giving Illinois its biggest plays of the afternoon.Then the offense completely disappeared.Illinois managed just three points in the second half, wasting what had been an impressive start. Drives stalled, the explosive plays dried up and the Illini failed to respond as Duke took control of the game.As bad as the second-half offense was, the defense was significantly worse.NATE. Saturday was the first major test of that new-look defense, and it failed miserably.Duke bullied Illinois at the line of scrimmage and gashed the Illini repeatedly on the ground. Illinois defenders missed tackles, were pushed around up front and struggled to get off blocks as Duke consistently found room to run. There was little resistance when the Blue Devils needed yards, and Illinois never found an answer.For a team playing at home as the favorite, it was a pathetic defensive showing.The most concerning part was not simply that Duke scored 31 points. It was how easily the Blue Devils were able to impose themselves physically against Illinois. A defense built around a new coordinator and a new scheme looked completely overwhelmed when challenged.Dixon’s breakout performance was one of the few positives Illinois can take away from the loss, but even 166 yards and three touchdowns were not enough to overcome a nonexistent second-half offense and a defense that was brutalized for four quarters.Illinois is only two games into the season, but Saturday exposed serious problems that need to be fixed quickly.
