No. 6 Oregon, one of the trendy preseason picks to contend for the national championship, suffered a 39-31 loss at unranked Oklahoma State on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium, calling into question whether the Ducks can truly be considered contenders.The loss was particularly surprising given that Oklahoma State suffered a road loss to Tulsa just a week ago, when the Cowboys’ offense looked anemic. That wasn’t the case on Saturday.Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker outdueled Oregon’s Dante Moore, considered one of the top 2027 NFL Draft prospects. Mestemaker threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 109 yards and another score. Moore started 5 of 15 for just 45 yards in the first half before finishing 14 of 29 for 191 yards and two touchdowns.It is Oklahoma State’s first win since Aug. 28, 2025, when the Cowboys beat UT-Martin in their 2025 season opener. The win over Oregon broke a 12-game losing streak and marks the first time a team has broken a losing streak of 10 or more games against an opponent ranked in the Associated Press top 10.“Everybody counted them out, told them how bad they were,” Oklahoma State coach Eric Morris said, with his voice quivering. “Told them how bad they were. Proud of those kids.”As fans rushed the field, ESPN reporter Taylor McGregor asked Morris what stood out about the moment, which marked his first win at Oklahoma State.“I don’t know if I can top this,” Morris said. “I’m not gonna retire, but I might think about it tonight.”What happened to the Ducks?Oregon’s offense, under the direction of new coordinator Drew Mehringer, sputtered early on.
