Anthropic CEO and billionaire Dario Amodei on Saturday called on artificial intelligence companies to deliberately slow the pace of frontier model development, warning that unchecked growth could enable autonomous AI swarms to hijack global internet infrastructure within the next year amid dire warnings from industry insiders.

Amodei, in an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,“ warned that safety guardrails and regulations aren’t keeping pace with the rapid development of AI—and joined others in issuing a warning of “catastrophic damage.”
Amodei, whose AI company has been among the “big three” pushing the limits of AI capabilities, said the risks of developing models too quickly include losing control of the systems, cyberattacks, bioterrorism, economic disruption and a takeover of “the entire internet” by autonomous bots, which he thinks could happen in the next six to 12 months.
