Property owners are requesting a new extension to the mandatory payment of rent through banks, because the measure’s October 1 start is approaching and critical issues remain regarding its implementation, they say.
The Panhellenic Federation of Property Owners (POMIDA) is asking the government not to limit the new postponement to another extension by a few months, but to link it to the actual operation of the new Property Ownership and Management Registry (MIDA). That will allow the declaration of the bank accounts at which the rents will be paid to precede the payments.
The government is examining the request and an extension is expected.
The issue does not only concern the start date of the measure. On the table are a series of exemptions requested by the owners, the protection of specific categories of rent, the possibility of paying rent into the accounts of co-owners or authorized third parties, as well as the establishment of a non-seizure clause for rents up to €1,600.
At the same time, the ministerial decision that will determine the exemptions from the sanctions is pending, while failure to comply with the procedure may have significant tax consequences for both owners and tenants.
