Malkajgiri police will file a petition before the court on Tuesday (September 15) seeking seven days’ custody of former Army Havaldar Upputholla Mallesh, 37, who was arrested in connection with the theft of firearms and ammunition from the 20 Battalion, Madras Regiment, in Bolarum.The petition is being filed on Tuesday as the court will have holidays on Saturday and Monday. Police want to question Mallesh in detail to establish his motive for stealing the weapons and ascertain whether others were involved in the theft.Mallesh, who retired from the Army on June 30 after 16 years of service, was arrested on Friday (September 11), after investigators recovered all the stolen firearms and ammunition from different locations.On August 30, he allegedly entered the regiment through the Kargil Gate around 11 p.m., broke open the Kote and removed the firearms. He then allegedly spent about an hour breaking open the ammunition chamber and took ammunition matching the stolen weapons.Mallesh’s exact motive is yet to be established. Police have indicated that he was disgruntled over his retirement from service, but investigators are questioning him to establish whether this was the sole motive and whether anyone else was involved in the theft.
