Sometimes doing what feels like the right thing can turn into a costly lesson — especially when the person asking for help is family. The money may be replaceable. The weirdness at the next family dinner can be a little harder to put a price on.

In a post on Reddit, a 32-year-old man explained that he lent his 45-year-old half-sister $10,000 to help pay her property taxes after inheriting about $500,000 from his late father. He said his sister has repaid only a fraction of the loan, and now she won’t respond when he asks about the money.

The siblings have always been close, which made the decision to lend the money easier. The poster said he wanted to help someone who had cared for him for many years, even though his sister had a history of not repaying loans to other family members.
